Three experts will share concrete examples that exemplify the evidence base of promoting success for the LGBT student, the ethnically diverse student, and the male student. Discussion will focus on strategies that can be used in the classroom, across the curriculum, and in the student success lab. Emphasis will be placed on identifying the individual needs of each student and helping learners develop a skill set they can take to into practice and life. When considering student success and diversity, every faculty member needs to consider the evidence base and support development of a healthy and representative workforce.

Martha Baker, PhD RN CNE, CENP, ACNS-BC

Martha_Baker_PhD_RN_CNE_CENP_ACNS-BCMartha Baker has been a nurse for over 40 years. She obtained her Master’s degree in nursing at University of Missouri-Columbia. Her PhD in Nursing is from University of Missouri- Columbia. Within her PHD studies, she has a minor in Ethics and Religious Studies. Her clinical experience is in critical care and more recently 15 years in nursing education. She has served in leadership positions in professional organizations including past president of the National Alaska Native American Indian Nurses Association. Her research areas include Native American Nurse Leadership, cultural competence and spirituality.

Stanley M. Harris, EdD, MSN-RN

Stanley_M_HarrisDr. Stanley Melton Harris is currently the International Curriculum Coordinator, charged with developing intercultural communication skills and understanding. He seeks out and appeals to a diversity of students who seek opportunities to develop skills and understanding about international events, issues, and problems. He encourages students to participate in a study-aboard program to enrich their learning and broaden their horizons. He is currently a RN with more than 30 years of experience in the profession. His research interests includes Sex-role stereotyping in nontraditional professions, breast cancer awareness, and digital technology in the classroom. Additionally, Dr. Harris is enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program at Walden University.
Dr. Harris is a veteran of the United States Army Nurse Corps, where he provided retention physicals for soldiers who served in Operation Desert Storm. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American & South Carolina Nurses Association, National & South Carolina League for Nursing, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., NAACP, and the Prince Hall Masons of South Carolina Jurisdiction. His volunteer efforts include the Advisory Board member for MUSC College of Nursing, Item-developer for National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Hearing Panel Officer for South Carolina Board of Nursing, Salvation Army of Orangeburg, and served on 5 dissertation committees at SC State University. In his spare time, Dr. Harris enjoys cooking, baking, writing in his journal, mentoring young males, and tutoring adult males (and the young) who struggle with reading, writing, and basic math skills. He believes that everyone has the capability of learning something. His favorite quote is by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune (Founder of Bethune Cookman College): “Cease to be a drudge. Seek to be an artist.”

Raney Linck, MSN, RN

Raney_Linck_MSN_RNMr. Linck is a simulation and clinical specialist at the University of Minnesota. His years of experience in academic and practice-based education have given him a reputation for innovation in classroom, lab, and clinical learning environments. He serves as a mentor and resource for LGBT students, nurses and faculty.
