Many nursing program administrators enter the role without the broad skill set needed to be successful. This webinar will provide common sense approaches to dealing with issues encountered in nursing education administration when dealing with students, faculty, staff and college administrators. Drs. Pettigrew and Colin, both experienced nurse educators, will discuss the strategies that have made each successful. Using their combined experience in education programs ranging from practical nursing to doctoral education, they share their best advice for leadership success.
Objectives
  • Identify issues leaders of nursing education programs commonly encounter as they work with students, faculty, staff, and college administration.
  • Discuss strategies to manage common problems encountered by nursing program leadership.
  • Recognize the value of mentors and peers, both within and external to, the leader’s academic home.

Jessie M. Colin, PhD, RN, FRE, FAAN

Jessie_M_Colin_PhD_RN_FRE_FAANJessie M. Colin is a professor and director of the PhD, nursing executive leadership, and nursing education programs at Barry University's College of Nursing and Health Sciences. A trilingual Haitian, Dr. Colin was recognized in 2009 as one of South Florida's most prominent black women. She serves as the chair of the education committee of the Florida Board of Nursing and was the first Haitian nurse appointed to the Florida Governor's Haiti Advisory Committee. She devotes her professional life to advancing nursing knowledge, health policy, and transcultural nursing, and co-founded the only baccalaureate nursing program in Haiti.

Amy Pettigrew, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF

Amy_PettigrewAmy C. Pettigrew, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF is the Dean, Benjamín León School of Nursing at Miami Dade College, Medical Campus in Miami, Florida. Dr Pettigrew has a PhD in Nursing (Administration of Academic Nursing)from Indiana University, a MSN degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University. In nursing education for 40 years, Dr. Pettigrew’s previous positions include: Professor of Nursing; Executive Director of Graduate Programs; Director, Center for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Nursing at University of Cincinnati and Associate Dean, College of Social Sciences and Chair, Department of Nursing at Xavier University. In her current position, Dr. Pettigrew has overseen the growth of the Benjamín León School of Nursing from 800 to 1700 ASN and RN-BSN students over the past six years. She currently manages 69 full-time faculty members, 106 adjunct faculty members, and 16 staff members. Dr. Pettigrew embraces diversity, and is a strong advocate for students and faculty members, supporting academic opportunities, cultural exchange, and the value of service to others.
