Hilda Alcindor, PhD (hon.) BA, RN, FAAN

Dean Alcindor was born and educated in Haiti and is fluent in four languages. She graduated as a registered nurse from the École Nationale d’Infirmières (National School of Nursing) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She received a BA in Health Services Administration and multiple certifications that include Quality Assurance, Case Management, Education, and was conferred an Honorary degree of “Docteur Honoris Causa” in nursing sciences.

As an RN, Ms. Alcindor worked internationally for over 40 years in several positions that include home health, critical care, emergency department, administration, and school health. Committed to the profession of nursing, she is an active member of the American Nurses Association, Black Nurses Association, Association des Infirmières Licenciées d’Haiti, and the Haitian-American Nurses Association.

In October 2004, Ms. Alcindor was appointed founding Dean (Doyenne) of Faculté des Sciences Infirmières de l'Université Episcopale d'Haïti (School of Nursing of the Episcopal University of Haiti), the first 4-year baccalaureate school of nursing in Haiti. Since its inception, FSIL has had 6 graduating classes (82 BSNs). These graduates are known internationally for excellence in nursing and leadership. In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, Ms. Alcindor and her students coordinated thousands of international volunteers to meet the needs of over 16,000 victims. Currently, they provide healthcare to over 5,000 patients a year. They specialize in serving some of the poorest people in Haiti.

Her commitment to leadership has included numerous articles, mentoring, speaking, and oversight of $16 million USD in economic and healthcare growth in Haiti. In October 2013, she was inducted as Fellow of the American Academy of Nurses. She is only the second Haitian nurse to receive this honor.

Dr. Alejandro is the Director of Care Management at UC Irvine Health, a Level One Trauma and Magnet® designated academic medical center in Orange County, California. He is a prominent expert in case management and working with at-risk populations and is a hospital executive consultant with a focus on systems redesign and care coordination. Dr. Alejandro was the 15th President (2012-2014) of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. He is the President-Elect for the Case Management Society of America and Treasurer of the International Honor Society of Nursing Building Corporation of Sigma Theta Tau International. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Alejandro received his certificate in vocational nursing from South Plains College in Lubbock, Texas; BS in nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington; MBA in healthcare management from the University of Dallas; MS in nursing from the University of Phoenix; and his PhD in human services from Capella University. Since 2000, Dr. Alejandro has taught ADN, BSN, MSN, and DNP level courses in the traditional classroom, clinical, and online settings. He has taught courses in nursing foundations, nursing research, healthcare quality, nursing finance, administration, business management, and organizational behavior.

Amy Austin is currently a full-time nursing faculty member at a community college in the Houston, Texas area. She has been in this role for over ten years. She serves on numerous college-wide committees and has previously served as the Faculty Organization President for the college. She earned her MSN from the University of North Alabama and her EdD from Northcentral University. She has taught in both the ADN and VN program, including classroom, lab, and clinical. Diane Billings is Chancellors' Professor Emeritus at Nursing at Indiana University School of Nursing, Indianapolis, IN where she was the Associate Dean for Teaching, Learning and Information Resources and developed and taught the masters/doctoral level Teacher Education Certificate courses. She is the co-editor of the award-winning Teaching in Nursing, and the co-editor of the Lippincott's Q and A Review for NCLEX-RN. She has published widely in nursing and higher education journals in the area of using information technology to support teaching and learning. She is the recipient of the Sigma Theta Tau International Founders Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Award for Outstanding Leadership in Nursing Education from the National League for Nursing, and is a Living Legend in the American Academy of Nursing. Recent projects include serving as the project director for the Faculty Preparation Program of the RWJF/New Jersey Nursing Initiative, participating on tasks forces at the NLN to develop vision statements for The Changing Faculty Role: Preparing Students for the Technological World of Health Care and Doctoral Preparation for Nurse Educators, and twice being a mentor in Sigma Theta Tau's Faculty Mentored Leadership Academy.

Kristofer is a Registered Nurse (RN) from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated with his BSN from Crown College and is currently completing his Doctor of Nursing Practice, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. Kristofer worked at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, as an RN, on an overflow observation unit, caring for a wide variety of patients from the emergency department, post-anesthesia care unit overflow, medical-surgical with telemetry, cardiac catheterization lab recovery, and interventional radiology recovery. Kristofer has traveled to Haiti several times since his first trip in 2009. He enjoys working with the students and nurses from FSIL nursing school in Leogane, Haiti. The nurses with whom he works in Haiti were his inspiration to become a nurse and continue his education as an FNP. Kristofer works with students and faculty for NurseTim and NurseThink to connect nursing education to clinical practice.

Jessie M. Colin is a professor and director of the PhD, nursing executive leadership, and nursing education programs at Barry University's College of Nursing and Health Sciences. A trilingual Haitian, Dr. Colin was recognized in 2009 as one of South Florida's most prominent black women. She serves as the chair of the education committee of the Florida Board of Nursing and was the first Haitian nurse appointed to the Florida Governor's Haiti Advisory Committee. She devotes her professional life to advancing nursing knowledge, health policy, and transcultural nursing, and co-founded the only baccalaureate nursing program in Haiti.

Dr. Susan Hendricks has been a nurse since 1983, with an MSN in Community Mental Health Nursing and a doctorate focused in Education. Throughout her career, Dr. Hendricks has used her experience in group facilitation to engage with patients, students, and faculty to achieve desired outcomes. Beginning in 1992, Dr. Hendricks has held faculty and academic leadership roles in nursing education, focusing intently on exceptional teaching methodologies in didactic and clinical education and curriculum, program planning, and evaluation. Beginning in 2009, Dr. Hendricks led a successful and innovative initiative (that has received national attention) to reform the RN to BSN curriculum across eight Indiana University campuses. Since 2011, Dr. Hendricks has led faculty in the core campus at Indiana University (IUPUI, IU-Bloomington, and IUPU-Columbus) in an extensive undergraduate curriculum revision process that is entering the implementation phase. Both of these extensive curriculum change projects engaged the faculty in a creative, collaborative manner, used evidence of best teaching and learning practices, and thoughtfully-included concepts and competencies relevant in our changing educational and health care environment.

Judy is currently involved in several youth advocacy initiatives and is on the board of the Healthy Teen Network. Authoring the books Creative Teaching Strategies for the Nurse Educator and Fast Facts on Adolescent Health for Nursing and Healthcare Providers has provided Judy with the opportunity to share strategies and information around the nation.

This is the second time we had Judy present to our faculty. She has such valuable information to share with faculty. She knew our audience very well. She is very approachable and adaptable. Judy is an asset to nursing education. We would welcome her back again.

Dr. Shaffer provides creative leadership, promotes growth and innovation at Jefferson College of Nursing. She has also taught at the BSN and graduate level, and is currently Director of an RN-BSN program with multi-state locations and an innovative concurrent enrollment partnership with associate degree programs. Ginny has successfully led programs through the accreditation process with NLNAC and CCNE, and served as consultant for state accreditation/approval processes. President of the Iowa Nurses Association from 2007 to 2011, she spends time advocating for nursing and healthcare issues at the state and national level. She was invited by Senator Tom Harkin to join him at the National Press Club in May 2009 where she talked about "Chronic Disease - Impact on Health Care". Ginny served on the Governor's Nursing Task Force in 2008 and the Iowa Consortium for Comprehensive Cancer Control from 2002-2007 and several statewide nursing task forces impacting practice and nursing regulation as well as health care organization boards of directors. She is currently on the Iowa Board of Nursing Workforce Advisory Committee. As a leader in the Iowa Needs Nurses Now Coalition, she was instrumental in activities furthering nursing practice and education in the state. Ginny was one of four nurses profiled in "The American Nurse", May/June 2009 as a nurse educator and advocate whose “efforts are aimed at improving the lives of patients and colleagues.” In October 2011 she was honored by the Iowa Nurses Association with the Edith Ruppert Award, in recognition of having contributed significantly to the improvement of nursing and the professional organization.

Mary Judith Yoho, PhD, RN, CNE

In her 40 years in nursing, Dr. Yoho has held roles in nursing practice, instruction, research, management, and leadership. Her positions in nursing academia include dean, campus president, director, and faculty. Throughout her career, she has coordinated and participated in multiple grant projects and has authored and co-authored textbooks and publications on topics including student success and faculty recruitment and retention. Dr. Yoho has presented nationally and internationally in the areas of test development, exam analysis, teaching strategies, learner engagement, and preparing nursing students for first-time success on the National Council State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) National Certification Licensing Exam (NCLEX®) for Practical and Registered Nurses. Dr. Yoho serves on dissertation committees for several universities. She is a National League for Nursing (NLN) Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), and annually conducts several CNE review workshops to help nursing faculty prepare for success on the NLN CNE certification exam. Currently, Dr. Yoho holds the position of Assistant Professor of Clinical Nursing and Clinical Coordinator for the Online RNBS Program at Oregon Health Science University.

Barbara L. Yoost is an Adjunct Professor of Nursing in the BSN program at Notre Dame College and Emerita Faculty at Kent State University. Previously she held faculty appointments in associate, diploma, and baccalaureate nursing programs. A Certified Nurse Educator since 2006 and a Fellow in the NLN Academy of Nursing Education, Barbara’s passion for innovative teaching strategies define her nursing education career. She has designed and implemented many active teaching/learning strategies including the Conceptual Care Map. The co-author of four nursing textbooks, Barbara mentors faculty in experiential methods designed to improve student comprehension and clinical judgment, and presents workshops across the United States and internationally in the Middle East and Europe.
