Asynchronous is a term that is used in E-learning to describe the discussion interactions. It means that we are in a discussion BUT we do not need to be online at the same time. For example:
- Monday – NurseTim posts a question, then Participant 1 answers.
- Tuesday – Participants 2-5 come online and answer the question and participants 4 and 5 also reply to Participant 1.
- Wednesday – Participants 6-10 come online and answer NurseTim’s question. Participants 2,4,7,8,9 also reply to other participants.
This is an example of a typical Asynchronous discussion. Not to be confused with chatting where everybody is online at the same time.
