The use of simulation in nursing education is expanding each year. In addition to learning the mechanics of how to work the simulation equipment, educators are faced with the difficulties of integrating simulation into their curriculum, using simulation for clinical remediation and interdisciplinary team work while building faculty collaboration. This panel discussion includes four simulation experts who have developed creative ways of meeting these challenges in their schools of nursing.

Nurses are key to quality care within the health care system, yet they continue to struggle with the daily challenges of providing beneficent care to their patients. It is not uncommon for nurses to feel disenfranchised and powerless when they perceive unresolved suffering and distress on a daily basis. Indeed, questions often revolve around informed consent, allocation of finite resources (including staffing), end-of-life, and miscommunication among other issues. It is expected that “Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States.” (IOM Report). However, to meet this goal, we must first understand the daily ethical challenges that nurses’ face that impact the patient-provider relationship and the strategies necessary to improve care within the system. The nursing faculty shortage has created a cyclic effect: The shortage of nurses had led to insufficient nursing faculty numbers to educate future nurses which results in fewer nurses being added into the nursing workforce. Enticing nurses into the nurse educator role through effective nurse faculty mentoring is one solution to the nursing faculty shortage. The decision to dismiss a student is never an easy one, especially when that dismissal is based on student performance in a clinical practice-oriented setting, where there exists a certain degree of instructor subjectivity. Thus, students may challenge academic dismissal through grievance procedures and the courts. When public safety is at issue, clinical faculty have the responsibility to dismiss students based on clinical performance. Precedent-setting cases are discussed where the courts uphold higher education faculties’ and grievance committees’ decisions when due process and rights are protected. Suggestions will be given for assurance of student and faculty rights, proper due process/grievance procedure, and documentation. View Objectives

With national initiatives toward quality and safety in healthcare and nurse-sensitive outcomes driving the nursing work force, today's nurse looks different than a nurse from a decade ago. Evidence-based practice, patient-centered care, and informatics are just a few of the elements with which we, as educators, need to equip our students. This teaching paradigm looks different than traditional models.
Presented in this webinar are methods found beneficial in the lab setting for helping create the new nurse and evaluation methods for use in identifying learning beyond the skill.
